Case Study:
Military Women's Memorial
Military Women's Memorial
You can tell by the photographs that we did this user testing during Covid. We had to be wearing masks and we had to do the testing outside to be safe.
We helped the exhibit design company G&A test 4 ideas they had for exhibits at the Military Women's Memorial.
They asked us to read the text and play with the interactive, and then they asked us questions. We gave our first impressions of what we thought about the exhibits, we explained what we learned, and we talked about things that were hard for us to do.
They used our opinions to create a report and make changes to the exhibits.
Map-Making Exhibit
For this exhibit, we learned about how maps are made and what topography means. At the left you can see the design for these exhibits from the design company.
We realized we didn't understand some of the instructions on the panels. The vocabulary was too advanced for our age group (we were 8-12 years old at the time). Some of these words seemed easy to the designers but they were new to us. Examples were: contour, relatively, topography and foreign. Because of our reaction, the designers plan on rewriting the instructions to be friendlier to kids.
We also were confused how to create a topographic map because we'd never seen one before. We had a hard time following the instructions. The designers made the instructions more clear and were planning on adding an example of what the topographic map should look like when complete.
The Weight of Water Exhibit
We thought this exhibit was the most fun! It was simple and easy to understand for kids. The designers were surprised. They thought it might be too simple but we wanted to keep trying it out!
The point of the exhibit is for museum visitors to lift two buckets of water as long as they can to understand how difficult it was for women to bring water in the battlefield to soldiers during the Revolutionary War. The designers wanted to test how heavy the buckets should be and if this was even fun. We helped them figure out the right weight and that yes, it is super fun!
Mail Call Exhibit
This exhibit was also pretty complicated but very fun to test. We had to match clues about soldiers with their mail, just like people did for WWII. When we made a match, we got to read more of the letter.
This was a fun exhibit! The designers realized that it was hard for us to actually open the letters to they are updating the design.
